Terms of registration

Draft for counsel. Values marked "proposed" are the programme documents' defaults, to be confirmed by the programme office.

Updated 18 October 2026

These are the terms on which you register as an artist on Kuta Zetu, the national registration for visual artists under the Affordable Housing Programme.

Who can register

  • Kenyan citizens aged 18 and over who make visual art, with a national ID.
  • One Creator ID per national ID. It is permanent and never reused. If an ID is already linked to a Creator ID, no second one is issued and the case goes to review.
  • Groups and collectives register each member individually.

What it costs

Nothing. Registration, registering your works, certificates, support, payouts and withdrawals are free to you.

What registering gives you, and what it does not

Registering gives you dated and checked proof that each registered work is yours and, once the panel selects you, a permanent Creator ID, an ID for every work and a participation certificate, a wallet and card to be paid into, a public profile, and eligibility for commissions, the national competition and the auction.

Registering protects your work and makes you eligible. It does not guarantee that you will be selected or commissioned. Selection is by independent panels, with fair representation of women and men and of every county, and every decision is recorded with a reason.

Your works and your rights

  • You keep the copyright in every work you register. The programme takes only a non-exclusive licence, limited to the programme, to show works it commissions. It never takes ownership of a work it has not paid for.
  • You confirm, for each work, that you made it and hold its rights. That declaration is kept with the time you made it.
  • Every work is checked: the original file and its details, the proof photo with the code, a fingerprint match against the whole registry, a web image search, and a check for generated images. No check rejects a work on its own; anything flagged goes to a person.
  • Public images of your works are shown at low resolution with a watermark. The originals stay private, and any location in a photo is removed from every public copy.
  • Your name and Creator ID travel with your work: on its certificate, its QR code, and wherever it goes.
  • Physical works are returned to you or held for you. They are never kept because a deadline passed.

Works made with others

A work made by more than one artist lists every contributor with a share, and the shares total 100%. Each contributor confirms before the certificate issues.

Claims and reviews

  • If someone registers a work that is yours, you can claim it. The work is frozen while the claim is reviewed, and the decision is recorded with reasons.
  • A review never ends in silence. You receive a reference when a case opens and the decision with its reason when it closes. Identity and payment cases are decided within 3 working days and works within 5 (proposed).
  • If a review goes against you, you can appeal within 14 days.

Being paid

  • Payments are made only to an account in your own verified name, through your Kuta Zetu wallet. You can withdraw to M-Pesa or a bank at any time.
  • A share of every payment is saved for you automatically, 10% unless you choose 5%, 20% or none (proposed). You can change it at any time.
  • Your wallet and card have their own terms, shown when you set them up.

Your account

  • Keep your phone number current: it is how we reach you and how you sign in.
  • Tell us if a message about your registration does not seem to be from us.
  • You can export your data or delete your profile at any time from Settings and privacy, as the privacy notice sets out.

Changes

If these terms change, the version you accepted stays on your record, and you are asked to accept the new version before anything that depends on it.
